"
Instructor Profile
Mr. Yoneko Kimura
Yoneko Kimura,
Director of Development Division, AIS Co., Ltd. / Member of the Japan Direction Association
Born in Ibaraki Prefecture. After graduating from Tsukuba Institute of Technology's Graphic Design Department, he got a job as a production designer in the restaurant industry. He creates and designs PR and promotional materials such as menus, posters, and newsletters for his own restaurants. In 2007, he moved to Tokyo with the aim of becoming a web designer. He has worked as a web designer and creative director for many companies, providing web production and web consulting support. Since 2010, he has worked as a coder and web designer in the SEO division and director of the advertising division at GMOTECH Inc. In 2015, he participated as a founding member of the company that would become AIS Inc.
, and is involved in launching new services and media, creating websites, and directing them. He currently serves as the general manager of the development division at AIS Inc., where he is responsible for system direction and internal direction in addition to production work. He is a member of the Japan Direction Association, and also provides operational support for director networking events and meetups.
Why we need to think about "Designer x XX" during the COVID-19 pandemic
The first half of the seminar was titled "Career organization and how to approach work from the perspective of 'numbers x design'" and featured Kimura introducing himself, his career so far, and the thinking behind his career choices (for more details about his career, please refer to the prior interview, " What is the 'career combination' required of web designers today ?").
Kimura, who started his career as a designer, has not given up the title of "web designer" even though he is now in charge of web direction. The reason for this is that he wants to "maintain his skills and on-site feel" and "understand the on-site production work."
Kimura: The good thing about being a web designer is that you can do the PDCA cycle by yourself. If you have an idea, you can create a website and verify its effectiveness. It's a job that really lets you shape a business. That's why I continue to work as a web designer.
However, Kimura says that it may be difficult to survive in the current COVID-19 pandemic with just designer skills. As remote work progresses, communication skills via email and chat tools have become more important, and the company's contribution has become visible in text form. On the other hand, designers tend to be judged on their work only based on their output for the day.
