"There can be no doubt that Turing's work was a vital factor in the success."
Connel Hugh O'Donnell Alexander, chess champion and member of the Enigma-breaking team
In 2014, the story was adapted into a film called The Imitation Game.
Legacy of a Genius
By exploring the possibilities of machines in the post-war years, Alan Turing became a pioneer in several areas of science and technology. He proved that computers were good for more than just calculations. Here are some of his most famous works.
The prototype of the modern computer. In 1946, the outstanding luxembourg telegram data mathematician presented the concept of ACE - an automatic computing machine with programmable memory. According to the author's idea, the device could process a large amount of data and solve complex problems.
Although the project was initially considered expensive and technically complex, a simplified version of the Pilot ACE device appeared in 1950. The model had a significant impact on the development of computing technology.

Turing test. In 1947, the scientist described an experiment that became the basis for research in the field of AI and defined the criterion for assessing the intelligence of machines.
The idea is simple: a person exchanges written messages with two people: a man and a woman. His goal is to find out the gender of the interlocutors by asking questions. In this case, the man tries to confuse the judge, and the woman helps to understand who is who. Turing wondered whether a machine could participate in such an experiment instead of a man. And whether the researcher would make mistakes in his conclusions as often. Modern CAPTCHA is a reverse Turing test.
