Fundamental rights are being trampled on

Post by asimd23 »

You're probably familiar with Alexa, the voice search box from Amazon that's found in more and more households. You can talk to Alexa. For example: "Alexa, are you spying on me?" - "No, I'm not spying on you. I respect your privacy." And yet we now know that Amazon with Alexa, Apple with Siri and also - of course, one would like to say - Google with its voice control system, record users' questions precisely - sometimes even manually (!) - and then make them very targeted offers.

Are they allowed to do that? Are emails allowed to mexico rcs data be searched for content in order to make commercial offers? Is our postman allowed to read postcards or even open letters in order to then politely offer us our sensitivities and wishes? Is the parcel delivery person allowed to look at the packages and then - if he sees which wines I like - make a suitable offer himself? If I look at the weather in Mallorca, is Google allowed to make me a Google offer for a trip to Mallorca?

Two of the above questions are answered with "Not allowed" and two with "They do". However, it is highly doubtful whether Amazon has the right (as a legal term) to commercially exploit the questions or requests that I put to its Alexa device. Where there is no plaintiff, there is no judge, and if a lawsuit is filed, the big internet companies refer the case to distant Silicon Valley, where the neutral judge will surely benevolently accept the lawsuits from distant Europe.
