American President Donald Trump , , suggested that Canada join the United States as the 51st state. According to him, this would lead to a significant reduction in duties and taxes, Canadians and Americans would become a "magnificent nation", and Canada would be able to receive "full protection from threats". The Prime Minister of the Republic, Justin Trudeau , who announced his resignation, rejected this proposal, despite all the promised "bonuses". But some Canadians, especially those living in border regions, liked the idea.

Canada and the United States may seem like good neighbors, but there have been many disputes between them about where one country ends and the other begins. It looks like there will be more disagreements about the world's longest border (8,891 km).
The fight for independence
In the summer of 1775, a year before the United investor database declared its independence from Great Britain, the Continental Army (a militia of American colonists fighting for American independence) launched an invasion of the neighboring British colony of Canada , intending to capture Quebec City . However, the operation on New Year's Day was a failure, costing dozens of lives, and the army was forced to retreat from Canada.
The American Revolutionary War between Britain and the United States ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The parties agreed on all US borders, including the northern border.
After Napoleon, the Americans hoped that Britain had become exhausted, and in 1812 they launched a new invasion of Canada . Many American military and political leaders expected to meet little resistance. US President Thomas Jefferson wrote, "The possession of Canada will be a mere matter of marching." However, the Americans were not greeted as liberators. They were forced to surrender the city of Detroit without firing a shot, and were defeated at the Battle of Queenston Heights after crossing the Niagara River. Plans to capture Montreal failed. In 1813, the Americans captured and burned the provincial capital of York (present-day Toronto ) . In retaliation, the British did the same to Washington , D.C.
