It is assumed that after graduation, they will have an advantage in the labor market as highly qualified specialists with both competencies in their main field of study and various digital skills.
At digital departments, students can master an additional IT specialty for free, regardless of their main field. The average duration of training is 10 months. Upon completion, graduates receive a diploma of professional training.
The training is available to students in their second to fourth years of bachelor's degree, third to fifth years of specialist's degree, master's degree (not IT profile) and residency. During their studies, students undergo internships and practical training in large companies and get the opportunity to find employment.
For example, Daria Grits, Director of Digitalization of Education at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), shared statistics on students in the digital department at the university: "In 2022, we enrolled 569 students, of which 472 successfully completed their studies: they passed the mandatory assessment, received credit for the curriculum, and even defended real projects at the hackathon. We are currently recruiting for the digital department programs for 2023-2024: 842 students have already enrolled. Recruitment is ongoing. This year, we are implementing five programs, two of which are new: "Fundamentals of Machine and Deep Learning" for students in non-IT fields and "Advanced Machine Learning Methods" for students in IT fields."
On average (at a large Moscow university), about 1,000 students were studying at the digital department in the 2022/2023 academic year. However, there are many more applications in the new intake. "In the 2022/2023 academic year, 1,322 students graduated from the professional retraining programs implemented at the digital department at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics (REU) in the areas of "Data Analysis and Machine Learning in Python" (for students in IT areas) and "Development of Web-oriented Solutions for the Implementation of Professional Tasks" (for students in non-IT areas). More than 2,800 people have already been enrolled in the programs in the new intake. We plan that in 2024 at least 2,300 students of the digital department will receive professional retraining diplomas," noted Deputy Director of the Higher School of Cybertechnology, Mathematics and Statistics of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. Plekhanov Leonid Olenev.
Maria Bulakina, Head of the Digital Department of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), spoke about the successes of students and new programs: "In the 2022/2023 academic year, about 1.5 thousand students from all areas of training - IT, engineering, economics, humanities - studied at the department. All enrolled students successfully defended their final certification papers and received diplomas of professional retraining and Innopolis certificates confirming the acquisition of IT competencies. In 2023/2024, the enrollment is more than 2,000 students. Generative neural networks are currently actively developing. And guys who study advertising, journalism, must be able to work with such a set of technologies. Therefore, in the new academic year, we are opening the seventh program, which is called "Digital Technologies in the Social and Humanitarian Sphere", so that students of the economics and humanities faculties can master industrial engineering, understand how to use neural networks to solve production problems."
One of the smallest in terms of the number of students is the digital department of the Russian Chemical-Technological University (RCTU) named after D.I. Mendeleyev. "In the 2022/2023 academic year, 496 students completed training in two programs. Now two new ones have been added to them - "Design and Development of Digital Twins", separately for IT and non-IT specialties. The planned number of students in this group is 800 people. In a year, we hope to increase their number to 1.5 thousand," explained a representative of the press service of the RCTU named after D.I. Mendeleyev.
