But when and how did Lean Construction come about?

In 1990, a book called The Machine That Changed the World was published in the United States by authors James P. Womack, Daniel T. Jones and Daniel Roos.

The chapters of the work included a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States on the Japanese automotive industry.

The narrative tells how the Japanese, through Toyota, simply achieved the great feat of overcoming competition from several countries and, in this way, becoming the best and fastest car manufacturers in the world.

The battle damage hit Japan hard, and it was also in poor financial shape.

It was exactly this major reduction in money that caused Toyota and other companies to adopt a new management model in the mid-1940s.

In this case, daily work had to take into account three factors:

short cash flow (movement of money in and out);
stock control (i.e. without accumulating too many supplies and materials in warehouses);
efficient production (which could function more qualitatively).
In other words, it was really a containment plan.

The idea then was to start using and implementing the A3 report.

Here's how it worked: Toyota executives wrote down on an A3 sheet of paper the root of the problem, its nature, and the number of solutions applicable to the entire car manufacturing process.

This meant that bottlenecks in production could be resolved and, of course, more value could be generated for customers.

This whole great idea became known as Lean Manufacturing .

And since it was impossible not to mention and recognize, even more, the differences of Toyota, the methodology also became known as the Toyota Production System, or TSP.

Another fact that proves the success of Toyota's story is that the book The Machine That Changed the World was published in more than 10 languages.

In short, Lean philosophy inspired Lean Manufacturing, which in turn received adaptations. One of them is precisely Lean Construction.
