what we know, and our emotions, what we feel.

Post by jrineakter »

There is a quote that I really love, a beautiful quote from Lao Tzu, that I know by heart, that I had posted above my desk for a very long time and which says: "If you are depressed, you live in the past; if you are anxious, you live in the future; if you are at peace, you live in the present." It is a beautiful quote, it is simple, it is short. They say to you: "If you live thinking about the past, you are depressed; if you are always afraid of the future, if you are anxious, you live in the future; and if you are at peace, you live in the present."

You see, even though I knew this quote by heart, even though I knew the broad outline of Dale Carnegie's book, because I read it often, well I have difficulty, it's hard to apply, even though I know, it's hard to put into practice.

And the reason is that there is... We talked about this in previous episodes too, but there is a kind of internal battle between our reason, what we know,
The Stoics understood this over 2,000 years ago when they said that there is this battle. And the famous Martin Luther King described it by saying that there is a civil war within us. We are almost two people.

This is also something we talked about in this saudi arabia whatsapp number data podcast and on the Français Authentique YouTube channel, which is covered in Le paradoxe du chimpanzé , this very beautiful book by Steve Peters, I think. I'm not nice to the author, because he did a great job and he helped me a lot, so the least I could do would be to remember his first name. I think it's Steve Peters. You can check that, type “français authentique” on YouTube, “français authentique livre”, and you'll see what I thought of this book. In this book, in fact, he talks to you about the difference between emotions and reason.

And we see that in the end knowledge is not much. What is key is application. And that is why it is key to read and reread the same books regularly. I was talking to you about Dale Carnegie, this famous book that I reread, I try to read it every year. I have set up a new routine of reading five key books every year, since we are not looking for knowledge but application and reminder, we want to be constantly reminded of certain concepts, well it is better to read 5 good books 10 times than 50 good books once. It is better to read 5 good books 10 times, you will go in depth, you will apply the concepts well, than 50 good books once.

And that's really why I encourage you to start this routine, because when I read this chapter again about living in the present, it motivated me for the week and it allowed me to apply it. So if I review certain concepts a little bit regularly, it will help me to soak them up.

Obviously, it is a slow but continuous progression, that is to say that we do not start from scratch when we have read the book and understood the concepts, but we must apply. That is the message of today, apply.

Another example. Everyone knows, I think we can all agree, everyone knows how to be healthy. We all know that we need to sleep well, that we need to eat healthy, preferably vegetables, avoid anything that is processed, we all know that we need to exercise every day and that we should not ingest too many poisons like alcohol, cigarettes, etc. So that is simple and everyone knows it. You can ask any person, even those who smoke or drink a lot of alcohol, they know all that.
