Johan: Hello, dear friends! Thank you for joining us for this new Authentic French video. So, I say "we" because I will not be alone today. Olivier, one of the tutors of the Authentic French Academy will join me for an authentic dialogue in French. And the concept that we are proposing to you today is a situation with a dialogue that we will repeat in two language registers. So, we will do it a first time in a common, standard language, and a second time, the same situation, in a slightly more familiar language. So, we will start in a moment.

Johan: So, that's it for the two dialogues. I hope you enjoyed it. Now we're going to look at a few points together.

Olivier: The first, of course, you understood, is to see the difference between everyday language and familiar language. For that, first of all, you have a video, which you can find. We will put the link in the description. And of course, everyday language is standard language also used on a daily basis, and familiar language, as its name indicates, is rather between families, between friends, with a few small nuances, which we will explain to you right after.

Johan: In colloquial language, for example, we will tend to cut certain words. For example, the word "sofa" will become "canap", the word "après-midi" will become "aprèm". We will not talk japan whatsapp number data about overtime, but in colloquial language, we will say "heure supp". So, we will cut certain words like that to save time when speaking. In colloquial language, we will also sometimes tend to eat certain words, that is to say to cut parts of certain words. Instead of saying "je ne me complain pas", we will tend, in colloquial language and when speaking in general, to say "j'me complain pas". "Je ne me complain pas" becomes "j'me complain pas".

You noticed in the dialogue, instead of saying "it's already that time", in standard language, we would say "it's already that time", well I said, in colloquial language, "it's already that time". So, we also tend to chew, to cut certain words.

Olivier: You may have heard it, there is also a little bit of verlan. Verlan is the fact of reversing syllables. It is very complicated to use but important to understand. For example, there is the word "relou". The word "relou" is the opposite of the word "heavy". Something heavy is something that is painful, that is difficult.

You can also see equivalences, synonyms, words that mean the same thing. For example, the word "work", which is a common word. In this example there are two versions: the word "boulot" and the word "taf", also the word "gosses" to talk about children.

There are also, of course, some idiomatic expressions. For example, quoi d'neuf. Quoi d'neuf, of course, means "what's new". So, we use it to ask how are you, it's an alternative, and to get news to see if there's anything new compared to the last time we saw this person.

Then there is the expression "un de ces quatre". Un de ces quatre means "in the future", in a future but which is undecided, it can be in a few days but also in one or two months. So, it means I hope to see you again soon, but I don't know when. And finally, "se tenir au jus". Se tenir au jus is the familiar way of saying "to keep up to date".
