Post by jrineakter »

Hi! Did you notice the difference in register in this dialogue? It is thanks to the use of advanced verbs that we used instead of "give". In this video, you will discover 10 synonyms of the verb "give" to enrich your vocabulary.

First synonym: "to give". It means to give in the sense of abandoning. We give something to someone, we transfer ownership to them.

For example, if I'm sitting on the subway and a lady comes and I give her my seat, you can say: "I give you my seat." You can say: "I give you my seat," but if you say: "I give you my seat," it's a little more advanced, a little more sustained.

Second synonym for "give": "entrust". Here, it means to give something to someone you trust, knowing that this person will take care of it.

For example, currently, I have friends who have gone on vacation and they have given me the key to their apartment. That way, if there is a problem, I can go and see. So, they have given me the keys to their apartment. Here, in this case, it is a little more formal, a little more advanced to say: "They have given me the keys to their apartment."

Third: “to grant.” To grant means to agree to give something to someone.

For example, imagine that someone has disappointed you several times, you can say to them: "I agree to give you one last chance", but you can also say: "I grant you one last chance". I give you one last chance, I grant you one last chance, it means the same thing.

Fourth: "to award". To award means to give iraq whatsapp number data a reward, to give a title or to give a medal for example. There is a bit of an idea that it is something official. It is not necessarily me who will award you something, it is very often an official authority.

For example, you could say: "This year, the Oscar for Best Actor went to Cillian Murphy." We could have said that the Oscar was given to him, which is a synonym, but it's a bit more precise to say that the Oscar was awarded to him.

Fifth: “to offer.” To offer means to give in the sense of making a gift.

For example, we would not say: "I gave him a watch for his birthday", we would rather say: "I gave him a watch for his birthday".

Sixth, we are entering a little more into colloquial language here, it is the verb "refiler". Refiler means to give something to someone, but it somewhat hides the idea that we want to get rid of this thing, we don't want it anymore. So, when we give something that we don't want anymore, well we say that we are refiling it. Once again, be careful, this is popular language, rather colloquial.

For example, my cousin gave me his old computer, but it doesn't work very well, it's super slow. You get the idea, he gave it to me but more to get rid of it, because he didn't want it anymore, he gave it to me.

Seventh: "to attribute." To attribute means to give something as part of a sharing. We have a set of things to give, we give one in particular to someone, we say that we attribute it to them.

For example, when you entered the restaurant and the waiter gave you a table, told you to sit here, you can say: "The waiter assigned us this table". There is a set of tables in the restaurant, he has to share, he chose this table for us, he gave it to us, we say that he assigned us this table.

In the introduction to this video, Tom was given the role of the pirate. So, again, there was a set of roles that we wanted to give to different students. The role of the pirate was given to Tom. We say that it was given to Tom.

Eighth: “to provide”. To provide has more or less two meanings. The first is the meaning of bringing.

For example, we can say that someone provides evidence in a police investigation for example. You can hear it in a movie. If you are provided with evidence, you are given proof, you are brought proof.

The second meaning of "provide" is to supply, to make available.

For example, you may hear: "For the big reception, it is the hotel that provides the food." This means that it is the hotel that brings the food, that makes it available to us, that gives it.

Ninth: "to indicate." To indicate means to give information. If you are lost in the street, you can say: "Excuse me, can you give me directions to the station, please?", but another, slightly more precise way of saying it would be: "Can you show me the way to the station, please?"

And finally: "to procure". To procure means to be the cause of something pleasant. Often, it is actually an emotion. Instead of saying: "My children give me a lot of pleasure", I can say: "My children give me a lot of pleasure". My family gives me a lot of pleasure, it means that being with them gives me a lot of pleasure. You can say, I hope: "Learning French gives me a lot of joy or motivation". Again, to procure means to give but in the sense of bringing an emotion that is positive.
