The "No Billag" debate in the National Council at the end of September was a lengthy debate in which as many parliamentarians as possible had to have their say. But it was not much more than empty talk. The complex issue was tackled too late - by at least thirty years. In 1984, the first private Swiss TV experiment was launched with "Zürivision". A program lasting several hours over five days was intended to prove for the first time that private companies could also make television here. But the successful attempt had no consequences. Private television financed by advertising remained banned.
The initiators' timing was perfect. In 1984, the asia rcs data first private broadcasters were launched in Germany: RTL and Sat.1, and soon after Pro Sieben, which soon achieved huge success in Switzerland as well. In 1994, Tele Züri was launched as a regional broadcaster that was allowed to broadcast a reduced amount of advertising in accordance with the new RTVG. But in the years that followed, the Walpen-SRG prevented all attempts to establish regional language television. Although private broadcasters were now supported with license fee money, only regional broadcasters, mostly launched in mountainous regions, with limited broadcasting power that could not endanger the national SRG monopoly.
