Site Relevance
Pay attention to the relevance of the site where you want to place an external link for link building.
Let's say your project is about healthy eating. You've placed a backlink to a website about cars. Will it be taken into account when ranking?
According to a former Google employee, not really:
"... links from high PageRank pages used to outlook email list be very important, but now more importance is attached to the relevance of the resource. Relevance is the new PR."
Obviously, a backlink from an influential site that is similar in topic to your site would be ideal.
Where is the backlink located - in the content or in the footer?
This also matters.
The fact is that links in sidebars and footers are significantly inferior to those located in the main content of the web page.
Is this an editorial link?
Editorial links are placed by webmasters/editors of the resource (it doesn't matter where exactly). If you have them, it means that someone finds your project really useful.
Another option is your own backlink: you register on a third-party platform and place it yourself (in your profile, comments, or elsewhere).
Keep in mind that editorial links are very valuable to Google. This is not surprising:
“…posting links (unnatural) without the participation of the resource editors or its owner may be regarded as a violation of the rules” (from the Google manual).
Anchor text
We are talking about the text (clickable) part of the link for link building.
For Google, anchor text is one of the ranking signals.
Let's say you've placed a backlink to your project with the anchor "vitamin cocktails." When the search engine sees this text, it thinks: "Well, well. Apparently, the resource links to a page about vitamin cocktails."
Please note: too many keywords in the anchor may be considered as overspam.
It is better to place a link with one key than with several.
Textual environment (context) of a link
This refers to phrases and words that are placed around the link for link building. Search engines most likely take them as additional anchor text.
Which is quite logical, since the text around the link also reflects the theme of the web page.
