Google's Art Filter will help you immerse yourself in culture

What if you could learn the story of the Girl with a Pearl Earring by trying on her earrings? Or how about putting on a Japanese helmet that will take you back to the days of samurai traditions?



Recently, Art Filter became available for use in the Google Arts & Culture south africa number data app, making it possible to become a work of art or try on iconic artifacts that are safely stored in museums.

Thanks to Google partners who make their amazing collections available online, the company was able to create five educational, engaging 3D-modeled augmented reality filters based on iconic paintings, objects, and accessories from around the world. Take a video or photo of yourself to become self-portraits of Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo, the famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” try on a traditional samurai helmet, and a magnificent ancient Egyptian necklace.

In this new experience, each filter has been carefully designed to allow everyone to explore the artifacts in detail from any angle. Before trying on a filter, you can read more about its history and context.



AI principles, with a focus on social utility, security, privacy, and scientific validity. Art Filter uses machine learning-based image processing because it requires sophisticated embedding of virtual content in the real world to make this type of AR feature possible. This approach allows artifacts to organically position themselves on your head or react to your facial expressions. Art Filter – like the popular Art Selfie feature – works only on your device; videos and photos are not stored unless you choose to save them or share them with friends.
