How to check headers
Testing headlines is relatively easy if you have (and know how to use) certain tools.
Visual Website Optimizer is a popular conversion testing tool.
Many digital marketing platforms provide built-in A/B testing tools so you can test headlines. MailChimp offers A/B testing. Ditto Unbounce, a landing page platform.
On each of these platforms, simply try one headline as version "A" and the other as version "B" and you'll quickly see which headline is more compelling.
Some final tips
I prefer longer headlines because they tend to hold the reader's attention.
The headline should be goal-oriented and begin to answer the question the reader has in mind: “What’s in it for me?”
Be sure to include subject lines in your emails, you will see your open rates and conversion rates skyrocket. When I get an email without a subject line above the body copy, I just skip it. And no, the subject line is NOT the subject line;
Photos can complement the headline, but they must be relevant.
Be positive. Turn negative statements into positive ones.
Specific details or numbers can be important in a headline. “How I Beat the Stock Market by 23% Last Year.” (23% is specific. “A lot” would be too general to get the same result.)
Headlines are vital because they draw the reader into the body of the text. If you're struggling, use one of the templates above. Then imagine you're about to tell someone a story or give advice; think about how you can grab their attention.
Finally… practice and testing!
The ultimate headline expert is the reader—the person you're trying to persuade. Your readers will tell you by their actions which headlines work and which don't.
