Digital natives are young people who have grown up with online technology from childhood. Born in the digital age of computers, video games and the internet, they are the 'native speakers' of the digital language. This generation, aged between 15 and 25, seems to deal with interactive products very differently than digital immigrants; people who were born before 1985.

Their intensive use of technological products makes them experienced users. However, are digital natives as skilled and 'tech savvy' as we think? And what should you consider when designing an excellent user experience for this target group?

We conducted an online survey among 200 digital natives to better understand this increasingly important target group. Below we list a number of important characteristics of digital natives that influence their actions in the online world.

Technology is deeply intertwined with everyday life
Technology plays an important role in the lives of digital natives. Day and night access to the internet is the norm and they are heavily dependent on their mobile phone for this. They especially value the multifunctionality of their phone and see their smartphone as a personal assistant.

Some facts:

Almost all digital natives own a telephone and a computer.
They use their phones continuously, all day long.
100% have a mobile phone, 89% of which own a smartphone.
Digital natives use their phones an average of 3.5 hours per day.
80% say they cannot survive a day without the internet.
On average, they spend 2 hours a day surfing the Internet.
The majority of digital natives feel disconnected and off the grid without their phones. Some quotes:

– “I hate being unreachable”;
– “I normally stay in touch with friends all day long via WhatsApp. benin mobile phone number list I notice that I really miss things when I forget my phone”;
– “I feel empty without my phone.”

A very social generation
Digital Natives are also heavy users of social networks. On average, they spend 1.5 hours per day on social networking sites. In addition, the research results tell us that:

94% are members of a social network;
92% have a Facebook account;
20% check Facebook before getting out of bed;
28% of people on Facebook watch it in bed before going to sleep;
Facebook is by far the most favorite social network;
WhatsApp is the favorite app, closely followed by Facebook and Twitter.
An impatient generation
Digital natives see 'speed' as a real must-have of their digital products such as mobile phones, computers, etc. A device must work fast (24%), it must last a long time (20%) and it must be fun to use (17%).
