Genghis Khan is considered the founding father of the Mongol Empire . Although in many parts of Asia he is portrayed as a cruel bloodthirsty conqueror, he left behind an important legacy that can still be found in everyday life: roads (including the famous Silk Road), political and military strategies, postal systems and much more.

The Gobi Desert
The Gobi Desert represents 30% of the surface area of Mongolia . Despite its arid climate and sandstorms, it is a must-see during a trip to the land of blue skies. It is accessible by train but to visit the different sites there, you will have to continue by 4x4 or perhaps on camelback. On site, you can camp in yurts. Do not miss the superb sand dunes of Khongoryn Els, Bayanzag with its fossilized dinosaur bones and its flamboyant cliffs. If you still have time, go to the frozen gorge of Yolyn Am to meet the Altai Ibex .
Karakorum
Located on the Silk Road, Karakorum has a rich and memorable past. It was previously the capital of the Mongol Empire until General Genghis Khan made Beijing his new capital. Later, his son, Ogoodei, had 4 giant tortoises and a large city wall built there, but the passage of Ming troops largely ravaged the city. Today, only 2 granite tortoises remain. But what still makes it attractive is the large Buddhist monastery of Erdene Zuu , a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape .
