In professional life, it rarely makes sense to cut the slate. Even if a "no" means that you want to look for something new, you will probably still need at least a reference. So keep a good tone and be obliging.

Remember: Money isn't everything Sure, money is good and more money is better. But if that's not possible, you can ask for other things instead.

Career counselor Roy Cohen points out that there are "a number of alternatives to money or bonuses. For example, company shares, gas vouchers or a monthly pass, conference attendance" and other non-cash benefits are valuable perks that do not impose a long-term additional burden on your company.

How about additional vacation days? Flexible working hours? A weekly work-from-home day?

Be open to such offers and think in advance about what you would like to ask for if the increase you want is not possible.

As I said, money isn't everything. But it can make a big difference. If you really put in the effort and provide tangible benefits to your company, you might actually earn more. Once you've worked out how and where you're exceeding expectations, you should probably ask for a raise.
