Biotech startup Recombinetics has used gene editing to create dairy cows and bulls that were missing horns. The company insists the animals are not genetically modified. Hornless cattle can also be bred naturally.
In August 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration found that the company had accidentally added bacterial genes, including a gene that gives them antibiotic resistance, to the animal's DNA in one of the bulls.
Despite the fact that such a change is potentially safe for humans, the FDA has raised the question of more meticulous control over such animals and technology.
The app "How gay are you?"
In August 2019, the journal Science published a study that senegal number data found that people who have had sexual contact with people of the same sex are more likely to have one or more DNA markers. But they cannot predict whether a person will turn out to be homosexual, the article notes.
After the study was released, developer Joel Bellenson launched the app “How gay are you?” The service analyzed the user’s DNA test data and compared it with the study results.
The launch of such an app drew criticism in the media from scientists. Over time, the app was removed from the online store GenePlaza, which had hosted it there.
Sending microorganisms into space
In the spring of 2019, an Israeli company sent the Beresheet spacecraft to the moon, which crashed . The Arch Mission Foundation, a non-profit organization from the United States, whose mission is to preserve human knowledge, sent an archive of 30 million pages of information, samples of human DNA, as well as tardigrades - microscopic invertebrates that can survive in extreme conditions.
The concept of planetary protection involves preventing biological contamination of celestial bodies. Without water, tardigrades are unlikely to survive in space, but this episode shows that today, "honor alone" may not be enough to protect planets.
