The team's new algorithm is based on advanced

The technology is called TRAPS (TRansient Attracting Profiles), and the team conducted a series of experiments at sea to find out how accurately it can identify these hotspots in the ocean.

During the experiments, the team deployed sets of buoys and dummies and ran a simulation system to identify likely locations where traps might appear. They then set up GPS tracking to track the journey of the free-drifting objects.

They found that within a few hours, the objects appeared in the places where the algorithm predicted they would be washed up, based on the prevailing ocean conditions.

“With GPS trackers, we could see where our objects were swimming bulgaria number data in real time,” says Thomas Peacock, a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. “Eventually, they converged on these traps.”



In 2017 and 2018, the team worked on a small research vessel. They placed a variety of small buoys and human-sized dummies in various locations.

Given that the ocean directs free-floating objects to locations predicted by the TRAPS algorithm, the team believes their new technology could be of great benefit to search and rescue teams. They plan to share it with emergency response services.
